Last week, Marie Sioen, one of our PhD students received the Brilliant Marine Research Idea Grant from VLIZ.  These grants strive to support out-of-the-box research ideas from young marine scientists. The grant was sponsored by Otary, a company for offshore energy.

Marie will perform research on the behavior of nanoplastics in marine ecosystems via implementation of STED-microscopy and TD-PTR-MS analysis techniques in mesocosm experiments. These innovative techniques have not been used often within the field of nanoplastics pollution, and will allow her to close some knowledge-gaps concerning the toxicity of plastics in the nano-size range.
